How to Teach Writing Across the Curriculum 6 – 8

How to Teach Writing Across the Curriculum 6 – 8 is a revised edition (2010) of my earlier How To book, bringing it up to date with current practice. It covers

  • helping children make the transition from talking to writing about what they have learned
  • using speaking and listening, drama and games to prepare for writing
  • use of skeleton planning frameworks to promote thinking skills
  • case studies of cross-curricular projects and examples of non-fiction texts
  • information for teachers about key language features of text types.

There’s also an appendix covering the nuts and bolts of teaching phonics, spelling and grammar in the early years of primary school.

How to Teach Writing Across the Curriculum 8 -14

How to Teach Writing Across the Curriculum 8 -14 is another 2010 revised edition. I was really glad of the opportunity to do it, because I’ve learned so much more about the process since the first edition, especially about ways of covering ‘talk for writing’ and of using skeleton models for transition to secondary school. It contains:

  • information on the organization and language features of the six main non-fiction text types
  • suggestions for talk for learning and talk for writing
  • ways of using cross-curricular learning as the basis of writing, including the use of skeleton frameworks
  • advice on teaching organizational and language features of texts
  • case studies and exemplar texts (with analysis).

Speaking Frames 8-10

A revised and edited version of two earlier books of speaking frames, for supporting children in making individual, paired and group presentations about cross-curricular topics. The idea is to introduce children to ‘literate’ language patterns, through oral work – no written exercises.
