Apostrophes in contracted words

An apostrophe can show where letters have been missed out:

when two or more words are contracted together, e.g.

it is > it's

they are > they're

does not > doesn't

within a single word, e.g
ever > e'er (usually in poetry)

forecastle > fo'c'sle
